She saw sea shells…

SILVERY SHEET The twin light houses on Hare Island

Remember anglicised Tuticorin is Thoothukudi now. So, once you get there don’t make the mistake of asking for directions to “Hare Island”. I was lost for a good 30 minutes as I drew a blank each time. Helpful people rattled off thenames of several other beaches but didn’t seem to know about Hare Island. After a few hits and misses, I reached the Port beach where luck smiled on me. An autorickshaw driver smiled and said, “You mean Muyal Theevu.” (‘Muyal’ is the Tamil word for ‘hare’ and ‘Theevu’ for island!)

Glad that I broke the code, I headed towards my RLT destination, which is roughly four km from the Tuticorin Port beach further South.

But what was this? Suddenly the road narrowed leading to a ‘no-entry’ zone. Small, neat buildings, painted light yellow came into sight on my left and on my right was a tall spiked fence. On it hung a board that said “Red Zone. Restricted Entry. Indian Navy.”

A view of the sea.
I was about to retreat from the Naval campus when I saw two pairs of eyes peering at me from behind the sand bags at the check post. I hesitantly asked the armed guards whether Muyal Theevu was in the same direction and whether they would allow me entry. I was surprised when they ushered me in with a wave of their hands. What luck, I told myself, because the area, being under the purview of the Indian Navy, is prohibited to visitors.

Fascinating sight
I drove on slowly on this truly less travelled road which got narrower, curved a few times and ended right on the beach. And it was a fascinating sight. The beach did not have the usual brown sand but an unusually grey and white coloured mixture. It seemed to sparkle as the tiny, white frothy waves washed the shore. The beach was strewn with corals and shells. The rippling water was silvery grey, as the mild afternoon sun glistened over it. Barely visible on the horizon was a small red and white boat. Further away was a big red cargo vessel almost standing still in the middle of the silent sea. In its foreground were two pairs of pelicans doing a little song and dance. As I sat on the sand absorbing the view, a group of noisy villagers on their way home from a nearby church passed by. One of the boys, Maniamman, stopped in front of me waving a string of crabs. Ten rupees each, he said, pointing to the empty spaces on the string, meaning how fast they were getting sold. I followed the group till we reached a dilapidated watch tower. Except for a few concrete steps that were intact, the walls and the roof lay in ruins amid the wild grass and the shrubs.

It made me wonder why the area had been neglected for it has the potential of being converted into a theme park. Near the fallen watch tower, I also spotted two light houses standing adjacent to each other — one old, and, the other, new. Both had been identically painted in black and white stripes. On the way back, I enquired with the local authorities who told me that Muyal Theevu had been identified for tourism development. But I couldn’t really figure out how the island got its name. Even the Government Gazette records it as Hare Island, though there is nothing “fast” about it. On the contrary, it is an enchanting place where the sea is tranquil and the island deserted.

The locals said Muyal Theevu is better known as Raja Theevu or Pandian Theevu. History has it that as the indigenous people of this coast, famous for pearl fishing, the Paravars, resorted to mass conversion, they were persecuted by the Nayaks of Madurai. So they fled from Tuticorin to Muyal Theevu, from where they migrated again in course of time.
Muyal Theevu is known for its healthy ecosystem of coral and sea grass. It is considered a haven for sea cows (dugongs).

Food fesitvel in Pearl city beach

It was a different day out for Tuticorin people, especially for food lovers, who reached the newly created Pearl City beach and tasted different dishes of food on Sunday evening. Collector Ashish Kumar presided over the silver jubilee programme, marking bifurcation of Tuticorin district from Tirunelveli. It was hosted by Food Safety and Drug Administration, Tuticorin. As many as 200 food items were kept ready for the Tuticorin populace who enjoyed eating out. With 35 food stalls, the venue under lights drew a good crowd that tasted spicy and mouth-watering dishes.

Pearl City Beach dedicated to Tuticorin populace

An instance of volunteering services of the police, says SP; it was created involving 200 police including women

The silver jubilee programme to mark the bifurcation of Tuticorin from Tirunelveli organised by the Tuticorin police, got off to a colourful start with a series of fireworks lighting up the sky on Sunday evening. Dedicating the Pearl City Beach, which has been established by the police on beach road here, to the Tuticorin populace, Superintendent of Police J. Rajendran said the police personnel had been rendering public service beyond the tasks assigned to them. Under the initiative of Mr. Rajendran, the Pearl City beach, which was previously termed as ‘police beach,’ was created involving 200 police personnel including women police. Taking pride in it, he said except Chennai no other coastal district across Tamil Nadu had witnessed such volunteering services of the police to set up a beach.

Electricity connections had been made at the beach in public interest. Drinking water connections had been made at 48 police stations across the district and the public had been utilising them well. Many of those involved in criminal activities had undergone social reformation, he said. Stressing upon reformation, he said a ‘silent revolution’ is on in Tuticorin.

Meanwhile, he informed that spot fine system has come in to effect in Tuticorin and the police would crackdown on drunken drivers and helmetless drivers soon. With traffic regulations in effect to ease out congestion, vehicular traffic flow is being maintained in arterial roads of Tuticorin town.
A high score of 95 and 99 in academic subjects alone would not be the deciding factor for any student to achieve high ranks in civil services. Anybody with self confidence in achieving the target would be able to achieve the desired results, he said.

District Revenue Officer S. Amirtha Jothi spoke on the role of parenting. Nowadays, students at schools are becoming victims of pressure exerted by teachers and parents. Every student has to be provided with a chance to act on his or her own interest in choosing subjects to pursue higher education. It was unfortunate that desires of children were scuttled since they could not act on their own. Students of various educational institutions, police personnel and their children put up various shows on stage during the programme. Earlier, resounding reception was accorded to Collector Ashish Kumar and District Revenue Officer S. Amirtha Jothi.

Tuticorin revels in silver jubilee fest

District administration has chalked out various programmes to mark its bifurcation from Tirunelveli,

Tuticorin is in a celebratory mode with various programmes being charted out to mark the silver jubilee of the bifurcation of Tuticorin from Tirunelveli.

The maiden event in Tamil Nadu has become a significant programme launched by the district administration. Tuticorin is the first district to have witnessed such a maiden event.

The eight-month long celebratory programme to cherish the bifurcation of Tuticorin, a place historically known as the birth place of freedom fighters, began at Tuticorin Port beach on March 25. Minister for Labour Welfare S. T. Chellapandian, in the presence of Collector Ashish Kumar, launched a mega compact disc compiling a data of historical facts about Tuticorin.

Since the commencement of the jubilation programme, the district administration, which has formed several committees to organise a variety of cultural programmes, has been hosting programmes across the district.
On all Sundays, enthusiasts stage performances on the premises of newly-created Pearl City beach opposite Caldwell School. Officials in departments of various government organisations have been organising programmes every week. Scores of families have been witnessing the entertainment programmes with a variety, which will come to a close on October 21.

Kovilpatti, a commercial town in the district, is equally poised and well wishers of Kovilpatti have been involved in promoting the status of the town, which has all potential of emerging as a district headquarters, according to Silver Jubilee Programme Coordinator M. Paramasivam. Taking pride, he said with donor funding, a two-day celebratory programme was being organised every week on all Saturdays and Sundays since the commencement of ‘Muthu Vizha’ on May 5. Students of various educational institutions volunteered to showcase their talents for this significant programme.

Students have been competing in quiz programmes, folk arts, dances, and dramas highlighting the contributions of freedom fighters who hailed from Tuticorin, and debates involving familiar small screen personalities, staged at a venue near Shenbagavalliamman Temple in the centre of Kovilpatti.

Toppers in public examinations of class X and XII were honoured during the programme, which continues until October 8, when a cine star would entertain the Kovilpatti public. A huge venue would be readied to accommodate more than 5, 000 people at the valedictory programme.

To promote commercial activities in and around Kovilpatti, operations dealing with safety matches manufacturing would also be staged. Mr. Paramasivam also added that a mega medical camp would be organised for a few days. Since Kazhugumalai is a tourist spot, cultural programmes would be conducted there to attract more visitors. With cooperation of DHAN Tourism for Development, programmes would be conducted, Mr. Paramasivam added.

K.P. Bharathi, Programme Leader, DHAN Tourism for Development, said that preliminary works were on to host ‘Kazhugumalai Heritage Day’ soon. Efforts were being made to include Kazhugumalai in the UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites to attract foreigners’ attention.
