Ettaiyapuram Palace located in the town of Ettaiyapuram in Tuticorin district is a famous tourist spot. During the region of Pandyas at Madurai, people from Chadragiri near Chittoor of Andhra Pradesh were brought and posted as “watch keepers (DhisaiKavalars) of Ilasanadu”.
This was latter called Ettayapuram. When the local chiefs refused to pay the taxes to the Pandya kingdom, Ettappar at Ilasanadu collected the taxes with the help of his army. Later Pandya king appointed Ettappar as a ruler of the place. After the rule of 150 years Ettayapuram was formed in 1565 in this place.
The main occupation of the people living here includes agriculture, weaving, making matches. The soil type is black soil, which supports the cultivation of cotton, sunflower, cholam, cumbu(pearl millet) and kezhvaragu (finger millet).
Ettayapuram Palace, Umarup Pulavar Dargah Bharathiar and Mani Mandapam, built in the memory of Subramania Bharathiyar, are the main tourist attractions of this place. Ettayapuram is well connected to Madurai, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli by road. Other major attractions in the vicinity include Nellaiappar temple in Tirunelveli, Courtallam waterfalls near Tirunelveli and the Ayyanar Temple, Vangarpatti 5 km. from Ettayapuram.

By Air:
Tuticorin airport is about 10 kms from the town, which connects the city to almost all major cities of India. You can get down here and hire taxis to get to the city. The other airport near to Tuticorin is at Vagaikulam in Tirunelveli dist.
By Rail:
Tuticorin is well connected by broad gauge rail to major cities like Tirunelveli, Chennai, Mysore, Bangalore, Madurai and Trivandrum.
By Road:
Tuticorin is well connected by National Highways with Madurai and Tirunelveli. Private and public bus services operate connecting the city to all the major cities of the state. Among local transport you can hire taxis and autos. You can also enjoy the city ride on cycle rickshaws.
