Boat race off Pearl City beach enthrals Tuticorin people



A boat race was conducted off Pearl City beach here on Sunday as part of silver jubilee celebrations to commemorate bifurcation of Tuticorin from Tirunelveli district. Fishermen racing in the boats carried placards of letters to highlight SILVER JUBILEE – 25 at the close of competition. The maiden event hosted by Fisheries Department under the initiative of Collector Ashish Kumar enthralled the spectators.

 Fifteen fishing boats with three fishermen in each set out to the sea from Vaan Island to Pearl City beach. Fishermen from various coastal hamlets, with national flags hoisted atop the vessels, competed with much vigour. The Inigo Nagar fishermen emerged victorious in the end.

Presiding over the programme, the Collector said that boat race should be a regular annual event in the Tuticorin calendar. Stressing the role of Indian Coast Guard and Marine Police, Mr. Kumar said that the personnel had been patrolling to safeguard fishermen and help them in distress.

Commandant S.M. Singh (Executive Officer), Indian Coast Guard Ship Veera, exhorted the fishermen to have safety equipment on board vessels and appealed them not to overexploit fishery resources, which must be conserved for the future. With exhibits of safety equipment, the Coast Guard personnel sensitised fishermen on safety measures. Stalls at the venue displayed search and rescue gadgets, speed boat, fire fighting and damage control equipment, distress call on emergency (1554) besides recruitment details for Indian Coast Guard service.


Fisherfolk had a gala time at the function. R. Amal Xavier, Joint Director of Fisheries; P. Pradip, Assistant Director of Fisheries (Marine); Prabavathi, Assistant Director, Fishing Harbour Management; and Vijayaraghavan, Fisheries Inspector, besides Marine Police personnel were present.





Mr. Kumar handed over a golden fish to the winners from Inigo Nagar. Students of various educational institutions entertained the audience with a dance programme. The Collector also honoured Sukumar, vice-president of Ind Bharat Thermal Power Limited, for having established high mast lights at the new beach.

Boat accessories has their own purpose. Buying them would certainly make your boat somewhat better. But still it is up to the owner if he os she finds it worthy to buy one.
