Tuticorin is in a celebratory mode with various programmes being charted out to mark the silver jubilee of the bifurcation of Tuticorin from Tirunelveli.

The maiden event in Tamil Nadu has become a significant programme launched by the district administration. Tuticorin is the first district to have witnessed such a maiden event.

The eight-month long celebratory programme to cherish the bifurcation of Tuticorin, a place historically known as the birth place of freedom fighters, began at Tuticorin Port beach on March 25. Minister for Labour Welfare S. T. Chellapandian, in the presence of Collector Ashish Kumar, launched a mega compact disc compiling a data of historical facts about Tuticorin.

Since the commencement of the jubilation programme, the district administration, which has formed several committees to organise a variety of cultural programmes, has been hosting programmes across the district.
On all Sundays, enthusiasts stage performances on the premises of newly-created Pearl City beach opposite Caldwell School. Officials in departments of various government organisations have been organising programmes every week. Scores of families have been witnessing the entertainment programmes with a variety, which will come to a close on October 21.

Kovilpatti, a commercial town in the district, is equally poised and well wishers of Kovilpatti have been involved in promoting the status of the town, which has all potential of emerging as a district headquarters, according to Silver Jubilee Programme Coordinator M. Paramasivam. Taking pride, he said with donor funding, a two-day celebratory programme was being organised every week on all Saturdays and Sundays since the commencement of ‘Muthu Vizha’ on May 5. Students of various educational institutions volunteered to showcase their talents for this significant programme.

Students have been competing in quiz programmes, folk arts, dances, and dramas highlighting the contributions of freedom fighters who hailed from Tuticorin, and debates involving familiar small screen personalities, staged at a venue near Shenbagavalliamman Temple in the centre of Kovilpatti.

Toppers in public examinations of class X and XII were honoured during the programme, which continues until October 8, when a cine star would entertain the Kovilpatti public. A huge venue would be readied to accommodate more than 5, 000 people at the valedictory programme.

To promote commercial activities in and around Kovilpatti, operations dealing with safety matches manufacturing would also be staged. Mr. Paramasivam also added that a mega medical camp would be organised for a few days. Since Kazhugumalai is a tourist spot, cultural programmes would be conducted there to attract more visitors. With cooperation of DHAN Tourism for Development, programmes would be conducted, Mr. Paramasivam added.

K.P. Bharathi, Programme Leader, DHAN Tourism for Development, said that preliminary works were on to host ‘Kazhugumalai Heritage Day’ soon. Efforts were being made to include Kazhugumalai in the UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites to attract foreigners’ attention.
