“Protect environment from pollution”

: It was a different day out for Tuticorin Collector, who participated in cycle rally along with students to raise an awareness of the need to protect the environment from pollution.
The programme was organised by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Tuticorin, in association with the district administration, as part of the World Environment Day.
As many as 400 students from 17 schools were involved in the rally, which commenced from Beach Park on beach road and proceeded through the thoroughfares of Tuticorin and concluded at Rajaji Park on Palayamkottai Road.

With much enthusiasm, the campaigners including Mr. Kumar, District Environment Engineer, TNPCB, Tuticorin, M. Murugan and the students sporting caps and scarves reached out to the public and highlighted the importance of conserving the greenery, marine eco system, other natural resources, eradicating polythene plastic bags banned by the government, enhancing forest cover, challenges to environment of industrial pollution and also on impacts of global warming.

Besides, 120 students from 28 schools competed in a quiz programme at Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls' Higher Secondary School. Earlier, the Collector inaugurated the plant sapling programme at the beach park. More than hundred saplings were planted.

Besides, officials in Department of Forests planted saplings in various parts of the district. J. Mahesh, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Tuticorin, Gladis Stelma, District Educational Officer, P. Rathinam and Kumaradoss, officials from Chief Educational Office and M. Pechimuthu, Coordinator of District Eco – Club, also took part in the programme.
