Silver jubilee celebrations of Tuticorin district bifurcation





To begin with, a programme was organised on beach grounds of V.O. Chidambaranar Port here on Sunday. S.T. Chellapandian, Labour Minister, unveiled the silver jubilee logo in the presence of Collector Ashish Kumar.

Earlier, a mini-marathon was organised by Sterlite Industries to mark the occasion. Many participants of various age groups competed in the event, which began opposite St. Mary's Boys Higher Secondary School.
Cultural programmes were held.

Immediately after bifurcation, Tuticorin was called as V.O. Chidambaranar District but later it was renamed as ‘Thoothukudi District'. Tuticorin as a district is replete with historical and cultural heritage.
In the ancient period, many freedom fighters, poets, musicians and artistes of Tuticorin made their presence felt all over the world.

Heroic deeds of freedom fighters, including V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Veerapandia Kattabomman, Tamil poet Barathi, Vellaya Thevan, Sundaralingam and Alagumuthu, who not only earned laurels for Tuticorin but for the entire nation.

Memorials and manimandapams of those involved in the freedom movement were built at various places across Tuticorin in recognition of their sacrifice.
